Shaun Gladwell

Born: 1977 ,

Biography/General

Born in Sydney in 1972, Shaun Gladwell has in recent years come to the fore as one of Australia's leading practitioners in video art. His works in painting, sculpture, video and performance poetically interrogate the links between personal history, cultural memory and contemporary space. In a dynamic and individual take on contemporary culture, Gladwell subtly references traditional Art History while remaining intrinsically urban, 'now' and excitingly fresh in his interpretation of the interactive space of the urban landscape. In his video works his concerns are expressed through skateboarding, hip-hop, graffiti, BMX bike riding and break-dancing.

Shaun Gladwell has exhibited extensively, both in Australia and internationally. Having recently exhibited in the '2008 Sydney Biennale', Gladwell will represent Australia in the Australian Pavilion at the 'Venice Biennale 2009'. This follows on from his success in 2007, when he was one of three Australian artists selected by Director Robert Storr to participate in 'Think with the Senses - Feel with the Mind' exhibition at the 'Venice Biennale 52nd International Art Exhibition'. Other recent exhibitions Gladwell has participated in include 2005 the 'Yokohama Triennale Art', Japan; the '2006 Bienal de Sao Paulo', Brazil; the '2006 Busan Biennale', South Korea and numerous solo exhibitions. Gladwell has also received a number of residencies and international exchange projects including Art Connexions, an international exchange initiative of the Goethe Institute, Berlin in 2006 and a residency at Tokyo Wonder Site in Shibuya, Japan, 2006.

Shaun Gladwell is represented in Australia by Anna Schwartz Gallery and his work is held in countless public and private collections in Australia and internationally.
