"So many artists cling to purely intellectual territory. An artist's life can be more straightforward that way.  However, I don't have the inclination to go about anything straightforwardly - I'm not sure why.

I've always liked the way that music can engage your feelings and that's partly what I've always wanted to do with art. However, there is the risk of certain viewers stereotyping you, the artist, as a particular kind of person because of their personally limited reading of your work. To be specific, I want to intellectually analyse my emotional life and find forms to represent that in a more objective way, for myself and anyone else who might be interested." (Michael Harrison speaking with Antonia Horrocks in Isabel Carlos, Luca Belgiorno-Nettis & Paula Latos-Valier, On Reason and Emotion – 14th Biennale of Sydney, Sydney, 2004, p.108)
